The Details
Explore the meticulous details behind this remarkable project undertaken by Wallemi Living Walls. Tasked with refurbishing Carleton University’s pre-existing living wall, Wallemi, and their skilled sub-contractors, executed a comprehensive overhaul. The previous hydroponic system, nearing the end of its life, prompted challenges such as water leakages, compromised plant growth, and increased energy consumption.
To address these issues, Wallemi implemented a cutting-edge geoponic system, optimizing the infrastructure already in place for the previous living wall. The retrofit not only solved water leakage problems but also enhanced growing conditions for the 2200 plants. The intricate process involved reconfiguring irrigation, drainage, and lighting systems to ensure optimal growth and sustainability.
The result is a visually striking focal point in Ritchcraft Hall’s main atrium, where conferences take place. Aroids, thriving as epiphytes on the living wall, showcase a diverse array of leaf colors and textures, creating a dynamic and visually appealing environment.
Carleton University’s living wall stands as a testament to the successful collaboration between the university and Wallemi Living Walls, exemplifying sustainable design and environmental consciousness. The revitalized space not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of Ritchcraft Hall but also contributes to a healthier and more eco-friendly campus.
